SNES FX REPRODUCTION F.A.Q. |
Will your SNES FX repos' work on my SNES or clone SNES systems?
Yes, 100% guarantee to work! We use donor Stunt Race FX that circuit logic is true SNES cartridge. If your clone system plays official games like Star Fox, Stunt Race FX it will play ours!

SNES FX repos' are normally $100, how can you be making it for half or less?
We kept our process simple with our custom engineered PCB; designed for easy soldering, for Stunt Race FX PCBs, and simple chip placement. We are also well setup given the current N64 & VB repo product line.

Why don’t you paint the SNES FX shells? Or other guys don't use the plane grey shells!
Most Stunt Race FX donors have shells in good shape they just need a clean. We are a believer in original high quality Nintendo ABS plastic. To keep same character of the game. For shells that have heavy cosmetic damage we offer a cheaper version of the repo for players that not mind.
We feel Star Fox 2 does not have to become a luxury item. We aim for budget players/collectors that want enjoy the content at reasonable price. So, we aimed delver the lowest price possible. If donor Stunt Race FX shell start have a lot of cosmetic damage, we may look into re-painting those shells in the future.

So how good of shape are your used SNES FX Shells”?
All shells are cleaned properly with solvents. They look very good, but will have some minor imperfections. They meets the quality standards of majority of collectors’, but if you require 100% mint conditions that perfectly flawless, we may not be best service for you.
Worth noting that due to the extra PCB inside, you may noticed the Cart a bit thicker in the upper right side. Yet, everything fits properly.
We also at times sell the FX repro line at reduced price with back shells that have heavier cosmetic damage. So note options in product listing.

Why make something like this?
Star Fox 2 in our option is a very solid game and many feel its one best games on the SNES. Super Weekend and Star Fox 1.5 also very nice item for anyone that a big fan of the franchise or SNES in general. The high price of Super Weekend makes it very un-affordable for many to own & we feel Star Fox 1.5 is a very neat insight to development process with content never been seen or enjoyed by players before.
We take pride in the SNES collector that make space on their shelf for our products. We hope our work meets the community respectable standards.

What is build quality or difference between your Star Fox 2 (SF2) or Super Weekend (SW) compared to other repo guys?
We respect other repo builders in the community and feel every method works fine. Some use heavy wiring; a common method of building SF2 in the past. Some are making a whole new PCB and solder only FX chips on. Some also have a multi cart with many FX games on it.
Method we choice is using donor Stunt Race FX and a custom PCB (an adaptor board) to easily soldered/install the new rom chip. We also included a booting capacitor to help boot & increase the reliability of game/cartridge. We find this method to be very professional, reliable, and help increase life span of the product.

What happens if your Star Fox 2 or other repo stops working in year or so from now?
This is unlikely to happen, but if does we will ship you a free PCB replacement at no cost to you. We have very few of our products that fail in the wild, but odd time one shows up. We went to a lot of trouble to design/build for high reliability. Our adaptor PCB has: high copper, large solder joints, heavy grounding & voltage copper pour, and had heavy testing at our end.

How long will it take to get my SNES FX order?
Since our focus on few FX games. Mainly Star Fox related we pre-build as much as we can. So, you should not have to wait long. We normally try keep around 5 of each in stock. Depending on demand we may increase this stock. So expect 2-4 weeks + shipping.

Do you have a letter mail shipping rate for SNES?
Sadly, the SNES cartridges are too big to fit in regular mail slot. We have been thinking about splitting the cartridge to fit in regular mail slot, each customer will need security screwdriver. So right now, you'll have to use the parcel or courier shipping rate.

The top label not staying (peeled up)? What happened? Is this a problem?
Its not a problem. We normally store our stock carts (with label on) upside down for a few months. This cure time will have the top label stay down permanently. Sometime, with new orders we don't have time to store the new cart/label upside down; we need to ship right away. If this happens we just request you apply constant pressure to top label for few weeks or a month. We apologies for this silly inconvenience.

Heard you guys trade? Will you take some FX SNES games or system at discount/trade?
Sure, please let us know what like in return. Normally looking at $20 per SNES FX donor. Also, we like the later generation Star Fox game, the one with regular chips on the PCB.

I plan make an order later, but am I going come back in six months and find your out of stock?
Everything we have on the website is 100% ready to sell and we aim to keep a hefty stock. We are a permanent retro-gaming factory open every day of the year. Yet, if demand very high & raw material cost increase, we may up prices. Right now, everything looks fine/stable on the SNES FX side of things.
Sometime we clear out less attractive shells, or PCB with some cosmetic damage at cheap price.

Do you plan to make combo cart with Super Weekend (SW) and Star Fox 2 (SF2)?
Not really. We feel it is better to focus on cost effect single FX game carts. Rather than more expensive combo cart. Cost of a 3-combo cart can be same as three individual carts.

Do you plan make PAL versions of SNES FX games for people across the pond?
Not at this time but if the demand is demonstrated we will likely do it in the future. Can send us a request, so we get an idea of demand.

How do your Star Fox 2 save its gaming data?
Do you plan move to more reliable Flash-Ram in the future? Like your Controller Pak?
Right now its the battery SRAM; so has that old-school round coin battery. We may get into changing to the Flash-ram, but would increase cost by at least $10. As involve soldering off the old SRAM chip & another PCB design.
UPDATE: We added another adaptor PCB to the FX Stunt Race PCB that use regular coin battery that super easy to replace. No soldering required!

I have been around and done retro gaming art designs and have better labels than on your website.
Sure, if got label of own design to contribute be greatly appreciated. We can forward you our template, size data, or current label design. Let us know. If have some ideas for Star Fox 1.5 don’t hesitate.

Do you overclock Star Fox 2 (SF2) or what clock speed is it at? Is your Super Weekend (SW) clock speed same as the official cart?
It is possible over clock SF2 with change of crystal part, right now we leave it clocked to standard Stunt Race FX clock speed, which been very popular and excepted by the community. Depending on request/demand we may look into an OC option.
All SW carts are same clock speed as official. We did a side-by-side test. So, you SW score is authentic when comparing it to others. With that said if plan enter an official contest and invest significant time in your score, maybe consider purchasing an official "Super Weekend" that way no one can dispute your hard earn score. See documentary “King of Kong – A Fist Full of Quarters” for more details on why most authentic hardware is so important for official score challenges.

Can you make SNES Doom or others?
Doom is a 2MB rom chip that requires a different Super FX chip; while our current products line is 1MB. We do not plan to move to Doom or other 2MB FX games.

I seen a few guides and YouTube videos on how make a Star Fox 2. What advice do have for me to build my own? I'm new to this.
Keep in mind the time and cost. Cost of buying all the stuff and time in build. Also, the time to learn and develop your skills and craft; depending on your current experience.
Regarding some advice: buy some spare donors, make a test cart with socket to insure your programmed roms are flashed correctly; can get bad chip sometimes. Download a few guides/videos - see the different approaches to it and use what works best for you. Have some fun with it. Take the time needed. Then when in the zone make a few as you may not come back to it. Remember, it is not for everyone, we all have our strengths and weakness, and there will always be some frustrating moments/days. It happens - even to us.
If never build repo before, suggest take on a smaller/simpler project before moving to a more complicated one like Star Fox 2.
We may also consider selling you our SF2 rom chips blanks & other parts. Just note ours have byte swapped to keep more of original pins. We can provide you more deails if needed.

I am working on a Star Fox mod or Super Weekend mod; can you help me test it on real hardware?
Sure can, we have a test board (built from a Stunt Race FX) that used for this sort of thing. We can ship you this test board, and programmable chips. Or let you easy find a chip programmer. So, you can just focus on your work. If making a pretty serious mod, we'll likely donate to all the hardware to you. Just request you to cover shipping cost and provide some proof of your work.
Another way to go is we can just make the full FX repo and you test it out. No programing or socket required; be nice if could cover shipping.

How can I avoid counterfeit Super Weekends (SW)? How are you protecting collectors that want or own an authentic SW?
Always ask the seller for picture of the PCB, it’s impossible to replicate the original SW PCB. Given the big investment you are planning to make (don't worry it's only going to go up in valve), there is no excuses for seller not providing an images of front and back of the PCB. Also, request the seller to put on paper, within the image, his contact info and date inside the picture.
We only sell one SW repo per customer. All our SW have alternative label, and markings on the PCB. Any suspicious orders will not be completed. Also, if someone scammed you with one of our carts get in contact with us. Well work together in track them down! A Vintex 64 team member also has an authentic SW cart and equally feel the importance authenticity/protection in the community.
To date, no one has tried anything with our products, likely due to statement in prior paragraph.

My Star Fox 2 (SF2) or Super Weekend (SW) repro (from another guy) stopped working can you fix it, please?
Never fun when that happens. Some of these repo’s can be quite a wire odyssey, and we do not know the quality of workmanship. Many guys are good. Some sadly not as much.
If cannot contact the original builder, send us a front to back image; see what up against. The approach we rather take is give you a discount on one of our ready build products. It likely be cheaper and more reliable option.
Just note we removed the upper corner plastic for our PCB. So, if using another shell, you will need use some needle noise to also remove this plastic.

Do you plan to make other SNES reproductions or anything else SNES?
We are looking to expend into some other SNES reproductions. Yet, our emerging library will be limited, as these repos are more for supporting the Super Stunner 6.
