The Star Fox of the VB
A highly rated and enjoyable: arcade style, shoot ’em up, battle gameplay in 3D simulation. Known to be inspired by the 1993 Star Fox title. Some say early code from Nintendo for a Star Fox on VB was given to T&E Soft who created this game.
Impressive use of 3D wireframes making it one most depth 3D games on VB. Yet this can be confusing to some players. Another neat feature is the reply option that allows players to view their performance from multiple perspectives.
Contains 6 levels each with end boss and many hidden Easter eggs.
With good presentation, excellent controls, and well done sound/music. It’s a favorite by some VB players for its advance 3D effects that reflect the original gaming vision for the VB. Red Alarm truly shows the 3D nature of the system and the potential future game could have if the system lasted longer.
One of few 3rd party releases to the Virtual Boy (due developer control to prevent poor quality tiles being allowed by other studios back in the day). Red Alarm feature an engine to display 3D graphics. It was rendered in wire-frame due to hardware power/limitation of the Virtual Boy; that could not handle heavy polygons. Yet, the 3D engine software could handle more advance polygons.
Reminder, the game has no save feature, but has cheat/debug menu for level selection.
Debug Menu: When Title screen shows rapidly press select 60 times (need be fast). An explosion sound be heard. Then start a new game and press L, R, Select, & A together. You have level select, invincibly option, and music test.
Note, this is a reproduction game/card, but use an original official OEM/Game chips on a new label, PCB, connector, & color shell.
Many find “Red Alarm” one of better, graphically impressive, fun, or nifty games on the VB. May felt Red Alarm had a lot of promise that shown what Virtual Boy could have truly been if it was developed properly.
Hailed very highly by many, seen alright to others, if your a Virtual Boy owner you really don’t want to miss this one.
