This television series was based on the classic horror novel “The Shadow over Innsmouth” by H.P. Original written in 1931 and finally published in 1936 after many rejections from publishers. Also, published in very limited numbers. The book starts off slow and predicable by today standards but is still enjoyable by all accounts. Overall it considered a great read, a good story, and one of Lovecraft best. Hence why it’s still in print today.
Now to the VB game. The goal to escape the massive mansion filled with maze hallways and doors. Your armed with pistol and limited ammo to defend yourself against various shaped monsters. Monsters with decent texture details. The challenge and pace come from the fixed time limed that affects the 13 out of 45 levels you’ll visit and the 4 alternative endings. You explore for powerups, ammo, health, orbs, and keys to exit the level. The in-game map helps your progress and the orbs will complete the map’s details.

The game is relative short. Yet, has replay value in which level you progress too, the random monster, random item placement, and 4 alternative endings.
The cinematics, graphics, 3D effects, sound, and music are decent and work together to deliver an immersive atmosphere. As you explore and cross path with the monsters you can shoot or try go around. The gun aim bit slow and bullets are very limited, but this adds to shock, tension and excitement. The randomized items and monsters can get your heart pounding.
This kind of game you either get into it and enjoy or its short comings and lower production value turn you away. The game is dated even by VB standards. The older Nes style First-Person-Shooter (FPS) perspective, old-school music/sound effects, and lack of level texture design making every level look similar. Monster fights can be challenging given their random movements and fix slow aiming controls.
Still, a very neat title for VB library; as nothing else like it. Players who look past the hurtles and give it a chance will likely have a great time.
