When it comes to Snes prototype games this is a big one!
A 2D, run, gun-like, action game that stars two mystical Leprechaun who are twin brothers: Flynn & Floyd.
Previewed in 1994, developed by Arcade Zone (A European company), and originally planned to be published by Sony/Nichibutsu, but dropped when Sony focused on its own PlayStation. Then sadly, Arcade Zone closed down not being able to publish this title on its own. This was because of lower popularity of Snes market at the time.
Yet in 2012 pre-orders opened for copies of this game and 600 copies were sold out within 2-3 weeks. Finally, Nightmare Busters launched worldwide on December 23, 2013, becoming the first new game on Snes console in 14+ years. Another re-printed collector edition was also released that limited to 150 copies. A mobile phone version of the game was also released.
Regarding the game itself, it sort of a Contra 3 style run, gun-like, action platformer. You have single & co-op players available. You have many magic attacks, powerups, and special moves. Players will slide, dash, to maneuver many enemies. New weapons, treasures, & items can be found through the game that help your progress.
Graphics are known to be very colorful, great sprites, good details, & nice animations. The Soundtrack & sound are also well noted.
However, the game can get quite hard/difficult; at times a lot of chaos on the screen. Playing two players co-op helps a lot, if have friend to play with. General players will get through first 2 levels, but later levels will get quite challenging even on easy mode.
Reception and reviews were decent overall. Reviewers noted the dark fantasy themes & lush atmosphere of the game. Many felt this game had potential, but was not quite there due to the difficulty, lack of content, only six stages and not many options in play styles.
Overall, the game can be fun, addictive, but challenging. It has a lot of presentation value. Still popular in Snes scene given its rich history.
Now you can get a reproduction copy of your own for a very reasonable price.
