Like other Contra games a side-scrolling run & gun. You can play single or two-player co-op to deal with an invasion of earth. The two main characters are "Bill Rizer" & "Lance". With a total of 6 action pack stages; 2 are in overhead view. Each stage with powerful end boss, and some creative mini bosses between. You loose a life from usual touch enemy, enemy bullets, or pit. To help you get a lot of power-ups, and can swap between two banks, & bombs that clear enemies from full screen.
Extra note on the strong multiplayer co-op action. You share a screen in side-scrolling & be split-screen in the 2 top view levels.
This game bit hard, to help you can set the difficulty to easy & set starting lives to 7. Yet, veteran players know it get quite hard in later levels.
For those that want revenged on this game, or to see the later levels or best ending in Hardest setting we made a version with infinite lives, and keep your weapons. Simple select the "Easy Edition".

Development had ideas of treating this game like a low-budget action movie. Programmers have been creative to keep action, pace, & handle a lot of details on screen. At this time Snes was aim more for strategy and role-playing, but the director wanted keep things fast-pace & give a boss-rush-feel. Fun fact in Europe the two main characters were replaced with robots, but rest game stayed mostly the same.
At end of the day Contra III is an extremely well-done game! Some note it may be showing its age, and not easy game get through, but with high quality action, high production value, and grand vision; makes this one of top 20 titles on the Snes hand down!
