Well-Designed Action Platformer!
Re-released many times. Featuring beautiful environments, interesting enemies, fun gameplay, excellent graphics, great soundtrack, and considered one of the greatest video games of all time.
You play as “Simon Belmont” with his trusty whip, in this side-scrolling platform game. You collect health, defeat many setting-inspired-enemies, defeat bosses, & explore. You use you whip to attack, climb, explore, & have secondary weapons like axe, dagger, etc.
Game has password system to save progress.
The challenge level is well balance. Game start of slow as if help training the player. Game is also quite linier with some hidden areas. You need to learn timing for jumping, dealing with pesky enemies, understand enemies’ patterns, and timing to beat a game like this. You also need stock up on items as you explore to build up your health and strength. Game later levels can get pretty hard, notable the near final bosses.
During development the aim for a pure action, and lean from prior predecessor to be less challenging and easy/enjoy to play. The development team was actually small and everyone took big part in game development. The game music and sound was to complement the atmosphere of the game. Many find it some of the best music on the snes. A good deal of effort went to the overall look in level design, but as much effort in layout of each level too.
Game was a big success, selling half a million copies, which quite a number back in those days. It was also re-released on many conceals including the Snes Classic.
Game did take a few hits for: the occasion slow down, graphics starting looking little dated in stages, & no multiple paths; each play through of the game will be the same.
As expected reviews where very good. Some noted the deep atmosphere was quite spine-tingling sense of impending doom, many players say how after playing this game things are not the same. They note the game holds up well. Others say it is “considered an essential purchase”.
Simply one of the finest Acton platform titles on the snes. A must for fans of the whip-cracking series, or just players looking for well-designed action plat formers. Even the most modern players fell under its spell!
