About the Animated Show:
The Pirates of Black Water was an animated (cartoon) show back in the 1990’s that was Hanna-Barbara attempt to re-gain the television cartoon market amount stiff competition.
Hanna-Barbara went all out with an all-star-voice cast, each episode cost ½ a million dollars to make, and very strongest writing. Reviewer noted the show well written, well crafted, & good characters. Show had comedic, action, drama, & a somber mood. Yet the dark themes of the show never made that large impact on the general populace.
The show become a cult classic, known for powerful story-telling, more darker tone, high quality animation, and still keeping the family friendly Hanna-Barbara style. Sadly, the show wasn’t a successful enough to justify its cost, the second season got canceled, before story was complete, and it was another chapter in the decline of this famous animation studio. Yet in modern time the show still has a following & it often makes many top animated show lists.
The animated show, does show its age, but was actually bit interesting to watch, a Vintex 64 team member purchased the DVD. The show really demonstrates how much the world has changed. You can probably find episodes on YouTube (here and there) as well for those interested.
Now About the Game:
Sunsoft turn the franchise into a 2D brawler for the snes. Similar to games like Final Fight & Streets of Rage. The game utilized the sources material from animated series for this swashbuckling adventure, sword-&-sorcery, fantasy, with a Road Warrior fashion within. You fight pirates, fantastic creatures, & find treasures.
You play as Ren (balanced character), or Loz (Heavy strength & low agility), or Tula (quick, low strength, but high agility).
This longer than average Capcom game (at the time) with full 8 stages.
Game has great co-op where two players can play together on same screen.
The difficulty level more normal and hard. So new players may have bit of learning curve to get used too. While veteran players of these type of games fell at home with medium or lower difficulty.
It was released on the Genesis, but it well known that the Snes version was more superior with different character balance, better graphics, colors, & music that reflected the cartoon’s unique style. This game took steps to make you feel like where playing in the original show in setting and spirit.
Music and sound well done and fits themes of the game.
The combat techniques also well balanced and of quality.
This item also available in three Rom Types:
The game was released to limited production run due to later Snes life-cycle and after show was canceled from television. As such current eBay prices going for $150 to $300.
In short this is an okay game with interesting setting & themes. Fans of the show or of classic fantasy animation will really appreciate this title. Players looking to try a decent Final Fight clone, or brawler, will find this title a good introduction. Those looking for high quality brawler may want to look elsewise.

- Beta Edition. Is a Prototype version of game that near complete and have some differences from final/retail.
- Readjusted. This version modified to same character with color update. Limit spawn enemies to 4 on screen.

- Players can select the same character without the need to execute a cheat to do so.
- Tula, Rez and Ioz 2nd colors are changed.
- The limit of enemies spawning in the screen was changed from 3 to 4.
